Designing for the IOT
Designing an IoT digital solution must ensure that the connection and interaction between an app and a physical object has to be as seamless and natural as possible.
So many questions arouse in the beginning: how do people usually interact with vending machines? What happens when you add a phone as a medium? How users select the products they want: look through the glass on vending machine or through the “glass” on their phones? How and when should the fridge unlock and lock back again?…
Some answers were found through research, some during the design process, but the bulk of them we got by simply “testing” their idea on an actual fridge and trying different iterations of possible interactions, use cases and edge cases.
In the end we tried to create a frictionless and optimised experience between the user and the fridge, using Gus Foods app as the medium. Its design takes great use of their brand’s doodles and quickness, but let’s their products and buying experience speak for themselves.
key takeaways
·
First time designing an IoT solution. That meant several prototyping sessions, mimicking the interactions between an app and the fridge, trying to understand the best flow for it. It was more fun than it should have been.
·
The first product and service that I designed and publicly available in Google Play Store and Apple Store. While working in an agency, it can often mean that you won’t be responsible anymore for a product once it is delivered to the client.
But it is hard to disassociate once you get real user feedback and all you want to do is work on the requested improvements and features.
